ACLS Fellowship for Scholars in Ghana, Nigeria, SA, Tanzania, Uganda

The American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS), with financial support from the Carnegie Corporation of New York, announces competitions for: Dissertation-completion fellowships in Ghana, Nigeria, Tanzania, and Uganda; and early-career postdoctoral fellowships in Ghana, Nigeria, Tanzania, Uganda, and South Africa.
Fellowship awards to promising African scholars are the centerpiece of the African Humanities Program. Approximately 40 such fellowships will be awarded annually. An initiative to publish the best manuscripts produced under the terms of AHP fellowships is now being established.  All fellows will be encouraged to submit their completed manuscripts to the African Humanities Series, which will be a cooperative venture between AHP and a major African university press.
Worth of Awards: Stipends are $10,000 for dissertation-completion Fellows and $17,000 for postdoctoral Fellows, plus an additional $1,000 per Fellow for books and media. Other forms of support may also be available depending on scholars’ needs.
Eligibility
  • Dissertation applicants must be doctoral candidates in the final year of writing the dissertation (No dissertation fellowships are available in South Africa)
  • Postdoctoral candidates must be scholars who have obtained the PhD within the past eight years
  • All applicants must be citizens of a sub-Saharan African country residing and working in Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, or Uganda
  • Projects must be in the humanities and must be carried out in sub-Saharan Africa. AHP fellowships may not be used for travel outside the continent
  •  The list of humanities disciplines includes anthropology, archaeology, studies of the fine and performing arts, history, linguistics, literature studies, studies of religion, and philosophy.

  • The clarity of the intellectual agenda
  • The feasibility of the work plan
  • The record of achievement of a postdoctoral scholar and the promise of a Ph.D. candidate

The Wangari Maathai Scholarship Fund Call for Applications

The Wangari Maathai Scholarship Fund is an environmental innovations fund set up in memory of Prof. Wangari Maathai that is aimed at developing action-oriented young people with strong values and commitment to the conservation of the physical and social environment in Kenya. The fund has been established by The Rockefeller Foundation, The Green Belt Movement and Kenya Community Development Foundation (KCDF).

The scholarship fund will be awarded annually, with the first cycle being granted during the 2013 academic year. In this first year, the tertiary education scholarship will be awarded to a young woman aged 18 to 25 years, who has demonstrated passion and personal commitment to environmental conservation. This individual must have also demonstrated their ability to successfully mobilize people and provide leadership in environmental advocacy.

Selection Criteria:

    Young women of between the ages of 18 – 25 years.
    Kenyan citizens currently residing in Kenya
    The scholarship is limited to applicants who have enrolled in a Kenyan tertiary institution
    Ability to demonstrate the environmental conservation project(s) they have started or have been involved in and how those initiatives have impacted people in their community, in ways that have improved environmental health and sustainability, and the fund’s goals of achieving a greener, cleaner and a more sustainable community.

2013-2014 BP Cambridge Scholarship for Egyptians

The 2013-2014 BP Scholarship for Egyptians at the University of Cambridge is now open for applications. The BP Cambridge Scholarship offers generous funds to Egyptian students to do a one-year postgraduate study at the University of Cambridge in some selected courses. The BP Scholarship for Egyptians is open to citizens of Egypt who are willing to return home for at least two years after the course.

Cambridge International Scholarship Scheme 2013-2014

The University of Cambridge will offer, via the Cambridge Trusts, approximately 80 scholarships under the Cambridge International Scholarship Scheme to international students who embark on a research course in the 2013–2014 academic session. The CISS 2013 awards will be made on a competitive basis to those applicants considered by their departments to be the most outstanding.
Value of the Award
Each award will underwrite the full cost of fees and maintenance for the duration of the course.
Duration of the Award
The award has a maximum duration of three years and is available to all students who will be registered for a three year research programme, leading to the PhD (including CPGS), that starts in the next academical year.
Eligibility
To be eligible to receive a Cambridge International Scholarship students must:
  1. be liable to pay the Overseas University Composition Fee.
  2. be engaged in a three year research programme leading to the PhD (i.e. will be registered as PhD, “Probationary PhD” or “CPGS”) starting in the next academical year.
  3. be engaged in full-time study.
  4. have a high upper-second-class undergraduate honours degree from a UK Higher Education Institution, or an equivalent from an Overseas Institution.
Please note: all students applying for a course of one year duration or less (including LLM, MSt, MBA, MED, Part III Mathematics, MPhil) in the next academical year are not eligible for a CISS award in the next academical year.
Application Process
  • In order to be eligible for a CISS award commencing in the next academic year, you must have applied for admission/continuation as a graduate student to the University of Cambridge either online (admission students only) or via the Graduate Admission and Scholarship Application Form (GRADSAF) by 2nd December 2012.It is important that you send in your supporting documentation as soon as possible after you have applied for admission online, because your application will not be looked at until this is received. The closing date for this funding is firm – no late applications can be considered.
  • Every eligible applicant for a three year research course leading to the PhD in the next academic year will be considered to have applied for a Cambridge International Scholarship provided their completed application is received by the Board of Graduate Studies before 1st December 2010.
  • Applicants are expected to also seek funding from other sources.
  • The application must be fully complete, i.e. including academic references and a research statement. The CISS committee will only consider academic achievement and research potential. It is therefore critical that academic references and a research statement are included.
  • Candidates should note that, given the volume of applications, applications which arrive after the deadline will not be entered for the Cambridge International Scholarships competition, nor will we provide feedback on the outcome of this competition at any stage.
  • In January the Board of Graduate Studies will submit a list of all eligible candidates to the relevant departments/faculties.
The competition proceeds in a number of stages:
  • Ranking
    In January and February, the departments and faculties will consider your application against all others and draw up a ranked list of their top applicants.
  • Nomination
    Departments/faculties will nominate the very best candidates from their ranked list and submit this, together with a departmental/faculty statement of support, to the Board of Graduate Studies.
  • Offer of Admission
    Departments/faculties will make a recommendation for an offer of admission to the Board of Graduate Studies for their nominated applicants.
  • Selection of top nominated candidates for CISS awards
    In March, all the nominated candidates with a conditional offer of admission will be considered by a selection committee comprising academic members of the Board of Graduate Studies. The committee will draw up a list of candidates who will be made an offer of a CISS award immediately. A reserve list of candidates will also be drawn up who may receive a CISS award should any become available. These candidates will receive a confirmatory email. Several hundred partially funded awards will also be made by the Cambridge Trusts to candidates unsuccessful in obtaining a full cost CISS award.
If candidates have not received an email by the end of April, they should assume that their application for a CISS award has not been successful.
It is a condition that successful candidates must meet all their outstanding conditions for admission to the University in order to receive CISS funding.

2013-2014 Hughes Hall Cambridge International PhD Scholarship

The Hughes Hall Cambridge International Scholarship is a fully funded scholarship is open to any international (non-EU) student to do a PhD at the University starting in October 2013. Eiffel International Scholarship in France 2013/2014

The 2013-2014 Eiffel scholarship for international students to study in France is now open for applications. The Eiffel excellence programme is run by the French Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs. Focusing on three key subject areas of sciences, economics and management, law and political science, its primary aim is to offer scholarships in French higher education establishments to future public and private sector decision-makers in foreign countries.
Objective
The Eiffel excellence scholarships are aimed at overseas students whose talents and abilities have been recognised by French higher education establishments wishing to attract them to pursue their studies. The courses undertaken in France will help them to obtain positions of responsibility in the public and private sectors. Only foreign nationals are eligible to apply for a scholarship from the French Government. In the case of dual nationality applicants, those with French nationality are ineligible.
Areas of Study Covered by the Eiffel Programme
The areas of study concerned by the Eiffel scholarships are:
  • engineering sciences at Master level, sciences in a broader sense for PhD level (engineering sciences, exact sciences such as mathematics, physics, chemistry and life sciences, nano- and bio-technology, earth and environmental sciences and information and communication sciences and technology)
  • economics and management
  • law and political sciences
Academic Levels of Study Covered by the Eiffel Programme
In submitting applications for Eiffel scholarships, French host educational establishments undertake to enrol students in one of the following courses:
  • courses awarding a Master or in colleges awarding an engineering science diploma
  • PhD courses as part of a jointly tutored or jointly supervised thesis with a foreign higher education establishment partner
  • applicants for Master courses must be no more than 30 years old at the deadline date for the selection committee of the 8th March 2013 (i.e. born after 08/03/1982) and no more than 35 years old for the PhD courses (i.e. born after 08/03/1977).
Worth of Scholarships
Master course: Eiffel scholarship-holders receive a monthly grant allowance of 1,181 Euros
(current applicable rate). In addition, the programme covers various expenses including return travel, health insurance and cultural activities. Scholarship-holders can also benefit from an additional accommodation allowance.
PhD course: Eiffel PhD scholarship-holders receive a monthly allowance of 1,400 Euros (current applicable rate) with additional allowances for one return trip (only one return trip will be reimbursed for law and political science students who undertake several stays in France), health insurance and cultural activities. Scholarship-holders can also benefit from an additional accommodation allowance.
How to Apply
French higher education establishments shortlist the best overseas students whom they wish to enrol in their courses for Eiffel scholarships. The different establishments complete the application forms referring to instructions and guidelines issued by the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs. So to apply, you need to apply to a French higher institution and indicate that you wish to be nominated for the scholarship.
Selection Procedure
For the 2013/2014 academic year, the schedule is as follows:
  • application forms available on-line: September 26, 2012
  • deadline for submission of applications: January 9, 2013
  • publication of results: week beginning Monday 18th March 2013

Czech Government Scholarship for Rwandans and Ethiopians 2013-2014

The Government of the Czech Republic offers a grant of scholarships for the academic year 2012/2013 to the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, and the Republic of Rwanda. The offer has been officially communicated to the respective Ministries of Foreign Affairs. The scholarship is open for both graduate and undergraduate studies. There are seven (7) scholarships in Czech language and four (4) in English language. Details are below.
Scholarship Details
The scholarship programs are as follows:
1. Study Programs in the Czech language:
  • BA (Bachelor’s degree programs): 3-4 years
  • MA/MSc (Master’s degree programs): 4-6 years
  • PhD (Doctoral degree programs): 3-4 years;
Field of Study:
  • Ethiopia – geology, forestry, medicine, economics, agriculture, shoemaking
  • Rwanda – power engineering, economics (trade), agriculture/food-processing
2. Study Programs in the English language:
  • Follow-up MA/MSc (follow-up Master’s degree programs): 1-3 years
  • PhD (Doctoral degree programs): 3-4 years;

2013-2014 Ioma Evans-Pritchard/Commonwealth Scholarship at Oxford

The African Studies Centre, University of Oxford is now accepting applications for the 2013-2014 Ioma Evans-Pritchard/Commonwealth Scholarship. The scholarship is a part of the development of African and Interdisciplinary Studies, and it is hosted at St Anne’s College in conjunction with the African Studies Centre, University of Oxford.
Worth of Award
The Scholarship will cover the full university and college fees and a maintenance allowance for a suitably qualified student applying for the MSc African Studies.
Eligibility
To be eligible for the scholarship candidates must:
• Be nationals of a Commonwealth developing country,* and not at present living or studying in a developed country;
• Have not undertaken studies lasting one year or more in a developed country;
• Be able to confirm in writing that neither they or their families are able to pay for them to study in the UK;
• Be willing to return to their home country as soon as their award comes to an end (the Commonwealth Commission will only consider requests to extend leave to remain in the UK post-award for those wishing to progress from Master’s to PhD study and strict conditions will apply).

Your application for admission to the course must be submitted to the Graduate Admissions office by the closing date of the 2nd application deadline (18 January 2013) if you wish to be considered for the Ioma Evans-Pritchard/Commonwealth Scholarship.  Incomplete applications received by this deadline will not be considered for this award.

2013-2014 Waverley DPhil Scholarship at University of Oxford

The African Studies Centre, University of Oxford, and Waverley Fund are offering a joint scholarship for one DPhil student starting in October 2013.
The Waverley Fund was established in 2001. It aims to assist academically excellent students from disadvantaged backgrounds who have shown the potential to make a significant contribution in their future careers.
Worth of Scholarships
  • The scholarship will cover all university and college fees for the full duration of the student’s fee liability for the agreed course.
  • The scholarship will also include a grant for living expenses (exact amount to be confirmed) which should be sufficient to cover the cost of accommodation, food, utility bills and general living costs.
  • Overseas students are encouraged to apply for supplementary funds such as the Clarendon Fund, or other sources both in their home countries and in Oxford.
Eligibility
  • It will be awarded on the basis of outstanding academic merit
  • The scholarship is open to applicants who ordinarily reside in sub-Saharan Africa and intend on returning to their home country at the end of their studies.
  • Students must be registered in one of the following disciplines: International Development, Politics, History and Social Anthropology at the University of Oxford.
  • The continuation of the scholarship each year is subject to an annual renewal process based on satisfactory academic progress.
How to Apply
Note: In order to be considered for this scholarship, you must have secured a place on your chosen programme of study by the expected final decision date (13 March 2013).  Applications with an outstanding admissions decision after this date, or applications which are re-evaluated against the later March deadline field, are not eligible for scholarship consideration.

2013 – 2014 Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship for International Students

Applications are now open for the 2013 – 2014 Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship (Vanier CGS), which was created to attract and retain world-class doctoral students and to establish Canada as a global centre of excellence in research and higher learning. The Vanier CGS is open to both Canadian and international PhD students studying at Canadian universities.
Worth of Scholarship: $50,000 per year for three years
Eligibility for Nomination
To be considered for a Vanier CGS, you must:
  • be nominated by only one Canadian university, which must have received a Vanier CGS allocation;
  • be seeking financial support to pursue your first doctoral degree (or combined MA/PhD or MD/PhD). Note that only the PhD portion of a combined degree is eligible for funding;
  • intend to pursue, in the summer semester or the academic year following the announcement of results, full-time doctoral (or combined MA/PhD or MD/PhD) studies and research at the nominating university; Note that only the PhD portion of a combined degree is eligible for funding;
  • have completed no more than 20 months of doctoral studies as of May 1, 2013 (see Calculating Months of Doctoral Studies below);
  • have achieved a first-class average, as determined by your university, in each of the last two years of full-time study or equivalent. Applicants are encouraged to contact the university for its definition of a first-class average; and
  • not have already received a doctoral-level scholarship or fellowship from CIHR, NSERC or SSHRC to undertake or complete a doctoral degree.
  • Both Canadian and international students are eligible to be nominated for a Vanier CGS.
Note: In an effort to support students in broadening their research horizons and seeking new challenges, the Vanier CGS program strongly encourages candidates to pursue their studies beyond the university that granted their undergraduate and graduate degrees.
Eligibility to Hold an Award
To hold the award, the candidate must:
  • be registered as a full-time student at the nominating Canadian institution, and be pursuing a doctoral degree (or combined MA/PhD or MD/PhD); and
  • remain enrolled and demonstrate continued satisfactory progress in their doctoral program.
2013 Vanier CGS Competition Process
  • Applications are initiated in one of two ways. Either:
    1. the candidate informs the faculty of graduate studies at the selected university of their intent to apply to the Vanier CGS competition; or
    2. the university initiates the nomination process by contacting the candidate.
  • Applications are prepared by the candidate and submitted to the university by the nominating university’s internal deadline (set in ResearchNet by the nominating university) using the ResearchNet application system.
  • The nominating university performs its internal candidate-selection process.
  • The nominating university forwards recommended nominations to the appropriate federal granting agencies by November 6, 2012 (8:00 p.m. Eastern Time).
  • The granting agencies perform their selection process.
  • The granting agencies present their recommendations to the Vanier-Banting Board.
  • The Vanier-Banting Board endorses the recommended nominees.
  • The Steering Committee makes the final decisions for funding based on the recommendations for Vanier CGS awards.
  • Successful candidates are notified of the competition results in April 2013.
Important notes:
  • Students wishing to apply for a Vanier CGS should verify that the university to which they are applying for doctoral studies has a Vanier CGS allocation (see link below for universities with allocation). They must then inform the university that they wish to be considered for a Vanier CGS.
  • Once they have completed the Vanier CGS electronic application through ResearchNet, students must submit their application online to the Canadian university that will be putting forward their nomination. Applications submitted by candidates directly to one of the granting agencies, instead of through a Canadian university, will not be considered.
  • Only one university can submit a nomination for an individual student to an agency. If more than one university is interested in nominating an individual student for an award, the student must choose the university that will submit their nomination. Multiple nominations will not be accepted.

2013-2014 Norwegian government Quota Scholarship for Developing Countries

The Norwegian Quota Scheme provides funding for students from developing countries in the South and 300 from countries in the Western Balkans, Eastern Europe and in Central Asia to study in Norway.
The Scheme is quite popular both with the Norwegian institutions involved and among eligible students, most of whom are highly qualified in their field of study. Every year the number of applicants far exceeds the number of students admitted under the scheme.

Please read this carefully
  • Each student receives the same amount of money as a Norwegian student would do in an equivalent educational programme. 40 per cent of the amount is given as a grant and 60 per cent as a loan. However, the loan portion may be waived when the student returns to his/her home country after completing the course of study. Students who stay in Norway after finishing their studies or take up residence in another country than their home country must repay the loan.
  • Travelling expenses for entry into Norway may be reimbursed (fixed price). Students can apply for one annual home visit if the educational programme lasts longer than one year and for financial support for travelling expenses for field work during the course of study. When the student returns home within 3 months after finishing his/her studies, the cost of travelling home is covered by the Norwegian State Educational Loan Fund

  • As a student, you must apply directly from your home country. You must have stayed at least one year in your home country directly prior to the planned course of study at the Norwegian university /university college

Most of the programmes offered are at Master’s or PhD level, but the Quota Scheme also offers certain Bachelor’s study programmes.

The Quota Scheme will only enrol students from institutions (organisations, universities, authorities) which have collaboration agreements with Norwegian universities or university colleges. Applications for the 2013 – 2014 DAAD scholarship for Africans at the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) in South Africa are now open. DAAD, the German Academic Exchange Service, in association with AIMS provides five in-region scholarships for a PhD programme in Mathematical Sciences. 2013 ADB Internships for African Students

Students from member states of the African Development Bank are invited to apply for an internship in the bank.The broad objectives of the program are to:
  • Provide students with an opportunity to acquire professional and practical experience at the African Development Bank.

The 2013/2014 Commonwealth Shared Scholarships for students from developing countries to do taught Master’s courses in the UK are now open for applications. Commonwealth Shared Scholarships was set up by the Department for International Development (DFID) in 1986 in a unique partnership between the United Kingdom government and UK universities. All courses sponsored under the Commonwealth Shared Scholarship must be demonstrably relevant to the economic, social or technological development of the candidate’s home country. The Global Health Equity Scholars (GHES) fellowship is a one-year mentored research fellowship sponsored by the Fogarty International Center (FIC) and several collaborating institutes and centers at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The GHES program brings together a consortium that includes the University of California, Berkeley, Florida International University, Stanford University, and Yale University; and 12 affiliated international sites across 11 countries.
The main objective of the program is to generate a new and young cadre of global health researchers, educators, and professionals who will be prepared to address the new challenges in global health.The program will provide fellows with outstanding, interdisciplinary education and training in innovative global health research to promote health equity for populations around the world.

Eligibility

This fellowship is open to:
    1. U.S.-based junior faculty with a current NIH K award or other career development/independence award;
    2. U.S.-based post-doctoral fellows (PhD, MD, or DVM). Post-doctoral applicants do not necessarily need to be affiliated with one of the four GHES institutions prior to applying; post-docs who are offered a new position by at least one program-affiliated faculty mentor (at UC Berkeley, FIU, Stanford or Yale) are welcome to apply and are eligible to receive the fellowship in the first year to go abroad. The fellow’s mentor or institution must also guarantee support of at least one year after the fellow returns from abroad;
  • U.S.-based advanced doctoral students enrolled in health-related doctoral programs, supported by a mentor (PI) at one of the four consortium institutions, who have passed their qualifying examination, whose dissertation project can be conducted at one of the program’s field sites abroad;
  • U.S.-based senior professional students (MD, DDS, DVM, PharmD, etc.) who have completed 3 years of professional school, who have a mentor (PI) at one of the 4 consortium institutions;
  • Foreign scholars from participating international sites: investigators within 5 years of their terminal degree (PhD, MD, etc.) and postdocs are eligible to apply. Please note that when supported by the GHES fellowship, the fellow cannot be receiving salary from his home institution.
  1. • Foreign scholars must be citizens of any nation exclusive of high-income countries as defined by the World Bank (link to eligible countries)
  2. • All applicants must have demonstrated interest in, and statement of commitment to, a career in global health research.
  3. • All applicants must have the support of a participating U.S. campus and/or an affiliated international site.

Description
The Waverley Fund was established in 2001. It aims to assist academically excellent students from disadvantaged backgrounds who have shown the potential to make a significant contribution in their future careers.
The African Studies Centre was launched in October 2004, and attracts extremely high quality graduates. The Centre is a unit of the School of Interdisciplinary Area Studies (SIAS), a department in the Social Sciences Division.
One scholarship will be awarded in 2013-14 for an MSc in African Studies, and one scholarship for a DPhil student.
100% of university and college fees, and a grant for living expenses (exact amount to be confirmed) which should be sufficient to cover your costs of accommodation, food, utility bills and general living costs (clothes, books, insurance, networking/socialising etc).
The awards are made for the full duration of a student’s fee liability for the agreed course. If your scholarship is offered for a course lasting more than one year, the continuation of your scholarship each year is subject to an annual renewal process based on satisfactory academic progress.

Eligible candidates must be ordinarily residents in the sub-Saharan Africa. Applicants must intend to return to their home country at the end of their studies.
Candidates should be applying to start an MSc in African Studies, DPhil Development Studies, DPhil Politics, DPhil History or DPhil Social Anthropology.
Scholarships will be awarded on the basis of outstanding academic merit.
Please ensure you meet the requirements for entry to your course, including English language requirements. See the Course Guide for more information.
Deferred students are not eligible.
Application Procedure
You do not need to actively apply for this scholarship. All eligible candidates that apply for the MSc in African StudiesDPhil in International Development, DPhil Politics, DPhil History or DPhil Social Anthropology by Application Deadline 2: (4 January 2013 for Politics; 18 January 2013 for all other subjects) will be considered.
In order to be considered for this scholarship, you must have secured a place on your chosen programme of study by the expected final decision date (13 March 2013).  Applications with an outstanding admissions decision after this date, or applications which are re-evaluated against the later March deadline field, are not eligible for scholarship consideration.
Applicants who are ‘re-routed’ (accepted onto a different programme of study to the one they originally applied for e.g. transferred from an MPhil to a DPhil or from one course to another) should contact us as soon as they are notified of the change in order to ensure that their application for a scholarship is maintained on their new programme of study.
